I Love You

February 18, 2020
*(This is my final project for Advanced Graphic Design Seminar SP2020 in Minneapolis College of Art and Design. )
What is “love”? You might find the answers are infinite. Love means different things that describes every individuals in multiple ways. How about: In what format will you describe love? Is it going to be a poster? A film? What about a series of photos?

“Where there is love there is life.” — Mahatma Gandhi

Ultimately, love can be the relationships between ones and another; Love can be a sculpture, and love can even be a Netflix show. As a designer, we often look at a subject from different aspects. It is the way of designer’s thinking, and the process is infinite. For me, I often finding myself taking assignment, and make design work when I have to. I like to follow the rubric because I haven’t push myself hard enough to think creatively and innovate. This semester long project will be my encouragement.

In this project, I am looking to use video based ways to express the theme of love, and show my understanding of the word love in different forms or design languages. However, love is just a theme of my personal choice, it can also be any different proposition. The purpose has nothing to do with productive, but creative.

Part I:
In this film, from the wide library of the world film in 100 years, the timeline of the year 1920 to 2020. I collected clips from each film when the characters expressing their passions to the beloved ones as saying "I love you", trim and pasted every clip together, the result as a 6 minutes collage film. I was hoping to show the power of love and the romantic moment between the lovers.

Part II:
This is a letter I wrote and presented in the film as the narrator. This is a love letter that I wrote to someone who exists but also not, someone exists somewhere in the world but not yet existed in my life-- it is to my future lover, my unknown partner. In Chinese culture, people burn things that you want to deliver to someone who has been long gone or someone you wish to be blessed. Knows that It is an undeliverable letter with no address to ship to, I decided to burn it, and pray for the wind would deliver it to him somewhere in the world.
